Updated: Jun 29, 2021

It seems like everyone is living fast these days. Working 24/7, cell phone addiction for adults and children, managing a family, worrying about the bills; these are all stressful and draining activities. Stress has a negative effect on both the body and the mind. Constant dings pulling our focus away from real living in the moment.

Here are some simple relaxation methods that anybody can do (Adults or Children). Try them all out and see which ones work the best for you!

  1. Do Breathing Exercises

This is a simple method and one you can utilize anywhere and at any time. Take five slow, deep breaths and focus all your attention on the breathing. Try to make your exhale longer than the inhale. Find a pace that is comfortable for you.

Breathe in, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and hold for 1, 2, then exhale for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. Repeat.

  1. Smell Something Relaxing Certain Aromas can change our mood, so why not utilize that to your advantage? It doesn't matter if you use essential oils, candles, or just perfume or body wash you like. Popular relaxation scents are lavender, peppermint and citrus, but use whatever works for you. Try Smitten's Aromatherapy Dough. which releases the soothing essential oils into the air and skin. No diffuser needed and is perfect to keep next to your computer to keep hands busy in place of video game playing, biting nails, eating, etc. Toss one in your purse or keep one in the car.

  2. Exercise

Exercise helps the body release endorphins, which elevates the mood. If working out isn't your forte, you can do something easy like running in place or quick-walking. Even just stretching will help relieve some worked-up tension.

  1. Meditate

Meditation might sound like it requires serious preparation and effort, but that's not true! Meditating just five minutes a day can have a very positive effect on stress and depression. Find a quiet place, wear some comfortable clothes, and just clear your mind and focus on your breathing! Download an App and put on your headphones.

  1. Write a Journal

Writing things down makes them seem less scary and personal. When you start feeling stressed or anxious, write down your thoughts. Seeing them on paper in black and white will put them in perspective. Whether a Kids or a Kid at Heart.

6. Take a Hot Bath

This is another classic and for a good reason! A warm bath helps increase the blood flow, which reduces stiffness in your body. For an added effect, you can add some essential oils and play some relaxing music or meditation – there are many apps available some for free on itunes.

  1. Solve a Puzzle

Doing something that requires concentration will help take your mind off your worries. Do a crossword puzzle, sudoku, or any kind of challenging brain teaser you enjoy.

  1. Repetitive Motions

Doing repetitive, mundane tasks can help your body relax. Brush your hair, wash the dishes, knit, rearrange your books... The choices are almost endless! There's a reason a lot of people clean when they're nervous.

  1. Socialize

Spending time with the ones closest to you can be a great stress relief. Share your feelings with your partner or a friend. Have a cuddle session with your pet. Laughing is also a great tension reliever.

  1. Listen to Music

Listening to your favorite songs has a proven calming effect, and it's easy to do! You can pop in your earbuds at almost any time and place, and take a time out to relax. Listening to music before a stressful event is also proven to help.
